Larry O. Spencer (Chair)
Larry O. Spencer spent more than 40 years in the Air Force, beginning his career in the enlisted ranks and rising to become a four-star general. General Spencer’s last assignment was as the Vice Chief of Staff of the US Air Force where he assisted the Chief of Staff in organizing, training and equipping 690,000 active-duty, Guard, Reserve and civilian forces. After retiring from the Air Force in 2015, General Spencer served as President of the Air Force Association until 2019. General Spencer received his Bachelor of Science Degree in industrial engineering technology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and has two Master of Science degrees. He currently serves on the boards of Whirlpool Corporation, Triumph Group, Inc., and Haynes International, Inc. General Spencer became a member of the AFBA Board in February 2020. He was named AFBA President in March 2020 and 5Star Life Insurance Company President in June 2020.
Bonnie Brazzell
Bonnie is a leading expert on worksite marketing of financial services products. She worked for Eastbridge Consulting Group from 1999 to September 2023. At Eastbridge Bonnie managed consulting projects for both worksite/voluntary and group clients. She focused on strategic, business, and marketing planning; competitor, product, and market analyses; and business line assessments. Prior to Eastbridge, she had 25 years of experience with Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company. During her tenure at Colonial, Bonnie worked in various positions including underwriting, product development, market development, and customer marketing. In July 2015, the Workplace Benefits Association inducted her into the Worksite Marketing Hall of Fame. She has a degree in mathematics and lives in Columbia, S.C
Joseph Fox
For more than 37 years, Joseph Fox served with the New York City Police Department, retiring in 2018 after serving seven years as the Chief of the NYPD’s Transit Bureau. Joe is currently a Life Coach, Executive Leadership Coach and passionate about helping people find the absolute best versions of themselves, professionally and personally. Joe’s current titles and responsibilities also include member, Board of Directors, 5Star Life Insurance, Presidential Medal of Valor Committee Member, Board Member, Rockaway’s September 11th Tribute Park and Master Trainer, Blue Courage. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Security Management from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He is a graduate of iPEC Coaching. He is also a graduate of the Police Management Institute at Columbia University.
Ronald R. Gendreau
Ronald R. Gendreau began his insurance career as an actuary in 1976. He served in many leadership roles at The Travelers, Unum/Colonial Life, and The Hartford over the next 39 or so years. He has experience in the Individual, Worksite and Group Life Insurance Markets. He joined the 5Star Board in 2013 where he is currently serving as the Lead Independent Auditor, and he also served on its Audit Committee over those years.
Randy Horn
Randy Horn brings 40 years of life insurance experience, in particular, in the group and worksite benefits arena. Horn retired from Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company after serving as CEO and president for 11 years where he held responsibility for the overall strategic direction of the voluntary benefits company. Prior to that, Horn worked for Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company for a span of 27 years where he held multiple roles of increasing responsibility. Before leaving, he had management responsibility for all functions including sales and marketing for a 2,800-employee business unit focused on individual life, health, and investment products. Horn has served on the boards of various non-profits in the Omaha, Nebraska area.
A.C. Roper
Lieutenant General A.C. Roper retired in 2024 after a distinguished 42-year career in the U.S. Army where he last served as Deputy Commander, U.S. Northern Command, and Vice Commander, U.S. Element, North American Aerospace Defense Command.
In his civilian capacity, Lieutenant General Roper has more than 33 years of law enforcement experience culminating with his 10-year tenure as the Chief of Police of the Birmingham Police Department. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice.
John F. Sampa
Command Sergeant Major (CSM) John F. Sampa was appointed as the 12th Command Sergeant Major of the Army National Guard on 15 February 2018. He joined the United States Army on 30 April 1987 and served in the Army National Guard and the United States Army, retiring with 35 years of service. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major on 8 April 2009. His military and civilian education includes all Noncommissioned Officer Education System levels. He was employed with the Texas Department of Public Safety in the Highway Patrol Division for more than 27 years in concurrence with his military service. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, the National Defense University Keystone Command Senior Enlisted Leader Course, the Texas Highway Patrol Academy and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of the Cumberlands.
Kimberley E. Wooding
Kim joined 5Star Life in 1997 and has more than 30 years of experience in life insurance and financial services. Before joining the company, she built her industry knowledge at PricewaterhouseCoopers performing audit and consulting services for insurance and financial services companies. In her current role, Wooding represents 5Star Life in interactions with regulators, rating agencies and industry associations. She is responsible for directing the financial activities and policies of the Company and ensuring that the company’s financial and operational management is in line with its strategic vision. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA), while also holding the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) designations.
